On Sunday 11/3, a friend and I made the trip to Webster with our 3 kids. My boy is 9 and his son and daughter are 8 & 9. Needless to say, having to get 3 kids up and all the way to Webster from New Carlisle was an adventure in itself. None of us had ever fished for musky before and the goal was to get one of the kids hooked into one. We stopped at Ye Olde Tackle box for some minnows. Which are huge ! Luckily the live bait rigs I made fit perfect on the 12" minnows. We launched the boat around 8a.m.. We worked our casting baits while pulling 2 big minnows behind us. Around 10:00 am the kids started to get impatient so we set them up with a couple crappie/perch rods with normal sized minnows.
My boy managed to snag one of the sucker lines asap which then got wrapped around the motor 2 wraps. My friend Joe was untangling that mess since he was the fortunate one to be at the stern while I manned the trolling motor on the bow. I looked back at the suckers when BAM! a huge hole appereared where the sucker that was and still attached to the line that had 2 wraps around the motor. Joe quickly unwrapped that and I went back to help untangle my boys rod, again, then untangle the 2nd sucker rod. The fish then crossed lines with the other crappie rod before cutting back across where the spread was and under the boat. Fortunatley we had the anchor hanging over the side to get tangeld in as well. It was quite the cluster. I was able to get everything untangled other than the anchor and looked down to see my biggest and first musky. Before it broke the line I reached elbow deep in the water and got a hand under her gill.
She had one treble hook in her mouth and one in the side of her lip. Both hooks came out easy and I hoisted her in for some pics. We had no tape and no net but I think that brought us luck. The kids were stoked, as were us dads as you can see from the pics. She was a heavy fish and I wish we knew her length. Im pretty sure she was over 40" but since we had no tape, we can call her an even 55". She swam away strong on the release after a couple minutes of revival. I wish it wasnt such a cluster so we could have had one of the kids crank her in but we go again for a couple days in a few weeks. We are all now hooked on this great fish and cant wait to go again.
